Less than seven days to go!

In conjunction with CRISP (Centre for Research into Information, Surveillance and Privacy) and my office we are holding a Question Time style event at London School of Economics set for a 6.00pm start and 8.00 pm finish on Wednesday 21st February . We have a chief constable, a parliamentarian, a senior member of a civil liberties organisation, a media personality and yours truly who will be battling it out whilst engaging and being challenged by the audience! It is free to attend but you must register -(details below) - It is shaping up to be a popular event !

The evening is centred on the future of surveillance cameras. Given the proliferation of surveillance cameras in society and the pace of evolution of technologies which can be integrated with them, there can never have been a more challenging time for the public, law makers and regulators than now! Those that follow my tweets and blogs will know of the reported scale of expansion of facial recognition technology in China - do you worry that this may be our future too? What is there to hold the state back from ' protecting us ' in that way! How do you feel about linking our cameras together, both public and private - for the public good? Do you think Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras, that feed one of the largest data bases in the UK, are subject to sufficient democratic oversight?

Do you love cameras or hate them? This event is an opportunity to have your say to people that can help make a difference. Have you ever heard the phrase " we need a public debate on these issues?"- Well, we are having one. Be part of it!

It was part of my promise under the National Surveillance Camera Strategy to ensure that the public had an influential voice in these matters. I am grateful to Professor William Webster of CRISP for making this happen. There are future plans in place for further citizen engagement under the umbrella of my strategy. That also, is for the future. The link is here and now, below.
